Tamara Wolski

Hi, my name is Tamara Wolski. I was born in a small town in Australia called Chinchilla. Whilst I was growing up Chinchilla  had approximately 3000 inhabitants and the closest town of Dalby (with 10,000 inhabitants) was an hour drive away. Due to the fact I grew up in a small town I have grow up always searching for places to live where I have a sense of community.
During my life I have lived in many different places over the world but none have ever impacted me as much as San Pedro La Laguna. I arrived with the intention of studying Spanish for 3 weeks, and stayed 6 weeks, to then leave for a little touring holiday in Mexico and Belize, to want to return then after for another 3 weeks. I hope to return to live there again some day, it is like my second home and many of the people there I refer to as family.
Within the first couple of weeks I began to realise the social implications of the education of some of the poor children in Lake Atitlan. I loved Lake Atitlan and knew that with our exchange rate a small amount of Australian money would go a long way to helping some of the children of the area. I asked my teacher Clarita what I could do to help and this was the first time I met with her husband, Urias. He was already doing research on trying to improve the education of indigenous children in the mountains of Lake Atitlan. Together we have worked together to devise a plan of how we can change the lives of a small group of motivated children in the highlands of Lake Atitlan.
My mission share my experience of Guatemala with Australian people, giving them the opportunity to study the coolest language in the world, Spanish, whilst giving a little to the lovely people of Lake Atitlan.
